Seconds to Contamination

Last night I made a roast and just as I was transferring it from the pan to the plate, the roast slipped off the fork and plopped on the floor. I quickly picked up the roast and put it back on the plate. Looked around and realized I was safe.. no pets were in sight nor was my husband or daughter! PHEW! I'm SAFE!

It got me thinking how many times I've dropped food on the floor and have followed the "10-Second Rule". Upon further investigation though I realized that the "Seconds" change upon discretion.. Was I still safe?

Some will allow 3 seconds, 5 seconds, 7 seconds, 10 seconds and even 30 seconds! I guess it's a matter of choice or rather how quick we are to react to something edible that has fallen on the floor and how we feel about germs and contamination of the food.  It's a matter of opinion.

Of course, it largely depends on the surface to which the item has fallen on to. I won't hesitate eating something directly off my floor because I've always said, "My floors are so clean you can eat off them" {Part of my clean freak rationale}.

However, if I'm out in a strange place, I will hesitate to follow any 'Second Rule".

I will usually hover between 5 and 10 seconds to pick up dropped food. What about you?

  1. LOL! I'm not sure what my "second" rule is. But, I think people aren't giving their bodies enough things to fight lately. So, ???? just go for it! My kids don't even wash their hands before they eat once they've come in from outside. I just forget! Bad mom! I'm hoping it will boost their immune systems. :)

  2. Good Morning leslie Sweetie...
Oh girl I am laughing up a storm. I have done that same thing. Isn't it funny how we look around to see who might have saw what we did? Even though that baby was hot, you just forked it right on back to that plate and said, "Honey dinner is ready." Yep I have done that one too.

I am like you, my floors are spotless. Sometimes I am a called a clean freak by the grands, but that is alright, I LOVE clean. A girl has to do what a girl has to do.

This was the cutest darn post. Thank you for sharing. It sure made me laugh this morning. Have a glorious Friday sweetie.

Many hugs and SO much love, Sherry

  3. There is no time limit if I drop it on my floor - or possible the floor of one of my family member's homes. Since we all have pets, I do check for hair....and depending on what it is, I still may wash it off and then eat it (ewwwww)

Away from home though, forget it - it hits the floor it hits the trash can!

  4. I have washed more food than I want to admit. Wash it, no soap please, then throw it back in the pan to reheat and get some of the water off. Works for me. I also have no pets to grab it as soon as it hits the floor.

  5. I agree, definitely depends on the surface but I'm SO glad you saved the roast.

  6. Mythbusters tested this myth and the answer is no seconds are safe. But since we are constantly around germs does it really matter?

  7. Leslie- girl you are so funny! I have done this many times! Sometimes it's washed off, dusted off or just blown off here!
Glad you saved your roast! I would rather eat something off of my floor than toss it and go out to eat a burger that some kid spit on. Just saying...
My mom always had a saying for everything and the one she would use when this happened, was If you bless it, it won't kill you anyway.
Scoop and save works for me.
    Hugs- Tete

  9. I agree, I always feel safe at home unless I drop something in the toilet! I usually don't eat anything I dropped on the ground while I'm out and about.
