You Can Call Me Heather

Here's a lovely representation of "Pink Saturday" for you..
You can call me Heather! Or, botanically speaking it's Calluna vulgaris. A popular evergreen ornamental shrub because of their low maintenance. Heather is a plant native to western and northern Europe, thriving in hard cold weather and marginal, rocky soil. For those of us in the United States however, they don't particularly like the hot summers, thus keeping on a good watering schedule is important as well as planting in a well drained soil. Heather will appreciate at least a half days worth of sun as anything less will make her stretch and loose her color. On average, heather plants grow to be between 8 - 20 inches tall and 2-3 feet wide.  If you're thinking of doing a mass planting of these beauties, make sure you plant them at least 3 feet away from their siblings and at least 2 feet away from other shrubs. They like good air circulation. If you're a bee keeper, you'll want to check Heather out as she is a real honey of a plant! Heather flowers early spring and is also available in white!

Of course I have to throw in something a little fun for Beverly's Pink Saturday so I thought I'd share this little "Bee Happy Dancing Flower" we got into to work recently.. This is the cutest dancing flower you've ever seen.. Solar powered it twists and turns and delights us all!

  1. My mil had a plant decoration back in the 70's that looked like your "new" Dancing Flower...lol....I have a small heather or lavender planted that just seems to be growing outward instead of up.

  2. Love the heather. I have always heard of it but had not seen it before. We would be too hot for it here. Love the dancing flower! I love tongue in cheek things in my beds. Need to find more tacky things this year. I have a goal!

Now that dancing flower is just precious, I will have to check out our stores and see if they have those. To cute for sure.

I am so enjoying the beautiful weather and all of the gorgeous flowers right now. I know that it will be short lived. The HOT temps will be here soon, so I need to enjoy the beauty while I can.

Hope you are well sweetie. I think of you daily as I stroll through the gardens and wonder what you saw today?
