Go Back to Sleep Mother

What is up with Mother Nature? Have you noticed that she's been confused? She created havoc in late October by dropping snow far too early and now, she's setting the clock back to fall like temps!

To say that my garden is a bit confused is putting it mildly as I'm sure yours are just the same. I thought it was odd when I saw forsythia blooming during a winters drive, and this surely should have been my first clue that Mother Nature is out of sync. But, during a closer examination of my own landscape I realized that Mother Nature definitely needs to go back to sleep so that my plants can get the much needed rest they need to put on my spring flowering show.

Take a look at the plants that are confused by this winters weather..

Snowdrops really? There hasn't been a drop of snow since I planted these yet, they are ready to pop!

Butterfly Bush that has new growth, but no! There's no butterflies to enjoy your surrender!

Hold tight lilac as it's not time for your delight!

Clematis that has new growth from old wood? Your old wood isn't even six months old!

Alliums that have popped up foliage, more leaves will have to be put down to keep them warm.

Strawberries that have not gone dormant but rather get greener as the days pass?

Garlic cloves that have hardly had enough time to set root let alone sprout!

My lovely Camellia that is swelling to put on a show!

Apparently I'm going to have to have a talk with my plants and tell them all that Mother Nature is teasing with them and that it's really not time to shine yet, but rather Mother needs to go back to bed. I'll add more leaves and compost and tell my youngin's to go back to sleep. They'll be OK, even with this preliminary new growth, but it's such a tease.

What's in your garden that has shown signs of regrowth?

  1. I have that going on here, too. The maple trees are budded and the dusty miller has never faded. The roses have stopped blooming, but still have their leaves and a few new areas of new growth.
And they wonder why Mother Nature has PMS- old man winter is slacking again.
